[语言交流]My experience of languages in Japan

　　
　　Several months ago, I went to Japan to attend an Esperanto conference in Nagasaki according to the the invitation from the Japanese Association of Buddhists and esperantists four years ago. I was invited to give a talk in Esperanto on Chinese Buddhism to the japanese buddhists. The aim of that is to introduce Chinese Buddhism and Esperanto to the japanese buddhists at the same time.
　　I accepted the invitation, and began to prepare my talks as the wish of Japanese buddhists. Firstly I thought about relearning Japanese lessons, which I learned by myself more than twenty years ago, but it was soon overcomed by the second thought, that it will be easier for me to use English in Japan on occasion without Japanese esperantists. So I delayed the relearning of Japanese until I was abroad to Japan.
　　I attained the airport Fukoka as the arrange of the Japanese Association of Buddhists and Esperantists, and waited the Japanese friend and esperantist, who would come to see me and accompany me to the site of the Esperanto meeting in Nagasaki. But I had to stay in the bus station to Nagasaki alone for more than four hours, for his airplane delayed. My staying in the station to Nagasaki aroused the attention of the officer, so he walked to me and asked me in Japanese, if I needed his help. Although I understood what he meant, but almost all my Japanese knowledge was away from me. I could say nothing more than repeated the sentence in Japanese: "I came from China. I'll go to Nagasaki to attend a meeting with a japanese friend, whom I am waiting for." I didn't know why I could onl makey that sentence. To his other questions I could say nothing to answer. I asked him in English, if he can speak English. It's much easier for me to speak English than Japanese, although I couldn't use English so freely as Esperanto. To my surprise, the officer shook his head and answered "No" in Japanese. So I was despaired to talk to him and could do nothing than waiting quietly in the station. Long hours past, and it was getting darker and darker. The officer often came to me and tried to talk to me, but I could not understand him well, and nor answer well in Japanese. That occurred only until the Japanese friend of Esperanto came to see me. Seeing, that we spoke Esperanto each other, the officer knew, that he was my friend, who would accompany me to Nagasaki. Confirmed about that, he released his worriedness for me, and arranged for our voyage to Nagasaki. I gave talks in the conference and buddhist temples in Esperanto, and visited many buddhist temples in many cities with the accompanying of Japanese esperantists. So Esperanto gave me much more help than English. And when I walked out without Esperanto friends, I had to use Japanese, English and Chinese to get helps, and I found, that many Japanese who was seemed with high knowledge even can't speak English and when I asked the way in English, they preferred to help me in poor Chinese.
　　Several years ago I accepted a visit of my Esperanto friend from poland. He liked to voyage and visited many countries. He told me, that when he came to China at the first time, he thought, that every Chinese could speak English. Seeing him in the street, many friendly Chinese greeted him in English: "Hello!" or "Good morning!" but when he was overjoyed and wanted to speak more, he found, that the person who greeted him couldn't understand him and could answer nothing more than "Goodbye!" or "See you later!". It seems that "Hello", "Goodbye" and other simple greetings are the only things we get after learning for many years. English is same difficult to learn to Japanese as to Chinese.
　　Many people think that all of the human beings in the word know English quite well, and Esperanto is totally useless. But I find that only English is insufficient and Esperanto maybe is same or maybe even much more useful for the persons, who would often contact friends from different countries. Although not everyone knows Esperanto and can use it freely, English is the same. And if esperatist was abroad, he would get help of esperantist persons and organizations freely. That's the superior of Esperanto than English.
　　Many friends advised me to give up Esperanto and learn English for my writing and translating, but I don't think it wrong to use Esperanto, for If I would spend all of my time and energy to learn English, I couldn't promise certainly, that I could write and translate in English, for as you see, that many people in our country spend his time to learn English, but seldom of them have capability to write in and translate into English. But doing that in Esperanto is much easier. Just because of that, in our country there are many Esperanto translator and writers. Many of them even aren't the professional persons for translating and writing.
