歧义句的一种类型：花园路径句 ( garden path sentence)

由于省掉句中某些部分而产生的局部歧义。 但整个句子其实是没有歧义的。人们偏向于对歧义句进行最容易接受的解读。然而那种人们不愿意接受的解释才是句子的正确解读。这类歧义现象会对语言的处理过程造成较大的困难。

例子：

1 ) The horse raced past the barn fell.

2 ) The girl told the stories cried.

3 ) The couple rushed through the dinner complained to the manager.

在句子(1)中, 我们习惯于将前半部分"The horse raced past the barn" 按照 NP+VP+PP 的语法结构去理解句子。然而当看到动词fell时, 才会意识到理解上的失误,并折回来对语言输入重新进行处理,才发现 raced 不是 一个 动词, 而是一个过去分词,整个句子是一个缩减了的定语从句: The horse which raced past the barn fell .
